Why FSU?
FSU's MSW in Social Leadership and MPA joint-pathway program attracted me because I plan to work in social policy. The experienced FSU faculty and location in Florida's capital city brought me to FSU's main campus for my graduate education.
Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
As a future social worker, I was inspired to pursue an MSW to become a master's-level social worker.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
As a first-year MSW/MPA student, my courses focus on social policy analysis, administration, and evaluation. In my coursework, I focus my assignments on economic justice, child welfare, and evidence-based policy. These areas of interest are important to me because the social work profession is grounded in poverty alleviation, human dignity, and social justice.
Who has been influential in your graduate journey?
I feel that my membership in the National Association of Social Workers has been most influential in supporting my graduate journey so far. Having been involved since the junior year of my BSW program, I have built a supportive network of social work professionals that has carried into my MSW/MPA program. The leadership of the NASW Florida chapter, faculty members, and student members alike have allowed me to thrive as a social work student.
Career aspirations
Looking ahead, I aspire to be a macro-level social worker. I have goals of working in social policy and implementing policies that uplift individuals, families, and communities out of poverty.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
If you are considering graduate school, I recommend reflecting on your unique passions and looking for programs that align with your goals. I also recommend building a network that will support you before, during, and after your graduate school endeavors.
Accomplishments during graduate career
This year, I was elected to serve on the NASW Florida Board of Directors as the MSW Student Representative for all MSW students statewide. My election to the board is especially meaningful to me, as a previous NASW-FL student ambassador. I now lead the student ambassador program and am working with chapter leadership to execute student-focused initiatives.
