Why FSU?

Conducting research with Dr. Thomas Joiner as my mentor was an opportunity I never imagined receiving. Combined with the rigorous clinical training provided, FSU could not be a more ideal place to pursue my graduate degree.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

Research as well as clinical work have always been a dual passion of mine. Accordingly, earning a PhD in Clinical Psychology stood out as the ideal way to follow both passions with rigor, while simultaneously affording countless opportunities for my future.

Importance of research and work

I research mechanisms underlying suicidal thoughts and behaviors, particularly in psychosis populations where suicide is catastrophically prevalent. However, despite the high rates of suicide, too little is known about the nature of these tragedies.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

Follow your passions! Too often, we forget that we are here to fuel our curiosity and to answer our genuine questions. Approaching research with authenticity and humility is a sure way to absorb the most and to enjoy the process.

Accomplishments during graduate career

After graduating with Honors from Northwestern University, I received a post-baccalaureate research fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), where I conducted research in schizophrenia for two years. During this time, I was fortunate to receive several awards, including an NIMH-sponsored conference travel grant and an institute-wide “Speaking About Science” Competition Winner scholarship.

In my first two years as a graduate student, I have had the opportunity to first-author five peer-reviewed publications and co-author ten. Further, I enthusiastically accepted a position as the assistant director of the Florida State University Psychology Clinic, which will fund my education for the next 12 months.

Career aspirations

I aspire to continue conducting research while also honing my clinical skills. In the future, I hope to combine these two passions by integrating my findings into my clinical practice. Ultimately, I dream never to surrender the hope of a future without suicide. Follow your passions!
