I am interested in researching how perceived self-concept in black males influences their academic achievement. I have noticed how media, communities, and relationships can influence the perceived value for black males, but I am interested in identifying protective factors that help increase higher academic achievement. I am also interested in further researching how social support is associated with confidence levels for children who have been impacted by divorce. My hope is that we can identify protective factors for black males to increase academic achievement and identify healthier post-divorce adjustment factors for those children impacted by divorce. I believe my McKnight Fellowship will increase my resources financially, professionally, and academically to help me pursue my goals and dreams. My ultimate goal is to help my community or communities of interest find ways to increase normalcy within their different groups compared to more dominant groups.
